Sip the Island Spirit: Your Guide to the 2026 Madeira Rum Festival

Springtime in Madeira brings more than just blooming flowers; it brings the sweet, unmistakable scent of fresh sugarcane. If you are visiting the island this April, you are in for an authentic treat. From April 14th to 18th, 2026, the heart of downtown Funchal will transform into a lively celebration of the island’s most spirited export for the 8th edition of the Madeira Rum Festival.

Organized by the Instituto do Vinho e do Artesanato da Madeira (IVBAM), this five-day event promises to be a vibrant mix of irreverent decor, fantastic live music, and a wonderfully relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

What Makes Madeira Rum So Special?

To truly embrace the Madeira flair, you have to know what you are tasting! Unlike most of the world's rum, which is distilled from molasses, Madeira produces Agricultural Rum (Aguardente de Cana). It is distilled directly from the juice of freshly crushed sugarcane grown right here on our volcanic terraced cliffs. The result is a pure, aromatic, and distinctively characterful spirit that is recognized globally for its premium quality.

The Heart of the Action: Avenida Arriaga

Taking place at the beautifully leafy Praça Central on Avenida Arriaga, the festival brings together the island's most legendary producers in one place. You will have the unique opportunity to meet the makers, enjoy informal tastings, and discover the distinctive qualities of rums from:

  • J. Faria & Filhos, Lda. (Engenhos do Norte)

  • Abel Fernandes, Lda.

  • Sociedade dos Engenhos da Calheta

  • Engenho Novo da Madeira (William Hinton)

  • Florentino Izildo Ferreira (O Reizinho)

  • Vinha Alta, Lda.

2026 Festival Highlights & Programme

The festival runs daily from 4:00 PM, making it the perfect late-afternoon activity after a day of exploring the levadas. Here is a sneak peek at what to expect:

  • Exclusive Masterclasses: Elevate your palate with expert-led sessions like "Madeira Rum & Chocolate" and "Madeira Rum & Delicacies" hosted by IVBAM's Rubina Vieira. Note: Masterclasses have limited capacity and require paid pre-registration at promocao.ivbam@madeira.gov.pt.
