Discover Madeira’s Sweetest Treasure
If you take a scenic drive along the sun-drenched southern coast of Madeira, you will immediately notice the endless, lush green terraces cascading down the cliffs toward the ocean. These are our famous banana plantations. Introduced in the 16th century, bananas quickly thrived in our rich volcanic soil and year-round subtropical climate, becoming one of the island’s most important export products. Unlike the uniform, oversized fruits found in global supermarkets, the Madeira banana is smaller, plumper, and infinitely sweeter. It is a central part of our culture, our economy, and our island pride.

A Taste of the Subtropics
The magic of the Madeira banana comes down to geography. Because the fruit ripens slower in our island sunshine, it develops a much higher sugar content and a beautifully aromatic flavour. Today, most are exported to mainland Portugal, where they are highly prized, but the best way to enjoy them is right here:
Culinary Classics: Our most famous traditional dish is Espada com Banana—a surprisingly delicious pairing of deep-sea black scabbard fish pan-fried with sweet bananas.
The Riper, The Better: Don't shy away from very ripe bananas with dark brown spots! Their antioxidant levels actually increase during ripening, which may help support the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
Island Creations: Locals have turned this fruit into everything imaginable, from sweet liqueurs to our very own local banana beer.
“Legend has it that Madeira bananas are so incredibly happy in the island sunshine, they simply refuse to grow anywhere else quite the same way!”
