First Half: Chances, a Post, and a Punch
Portugal dominated the opening 45 minutes, creating several high-quality chances — including a Rúben Dias header denied by goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux and a Rafael Leão effort that struck the post. Cristiano Ronaldo also had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside.
The scoreline stayed level, but the half ended in chaos. In first-half stoppage time, Rafael Leão lost his temper following a foul, assaulting Iván Román after the Chilean defender pushed him during a scuffle — both men were sent off, leaving each side with ten men for the rest of the match.
Ronaldo was taken off at half-time , with Martínez understandably managing his captain’s minutes ahead of the tournament.
Second Half: Guedes and Fernandes Settle It
The ten-versus-ten second half opened up considerably, and Portugal found their rhythm. Gonçalo Neto threaded a perfectly weighted ball into the box, and Gonçalo Guedes finished first-time to beat the keeper and make it 1–0 in the 58th minute.
Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead in the 75th minute, assisted by Francisco Conceição — a well-worked move that all but sealed the result. Chile pulled one back deep in stoppage time through Lucas Cepeda, who finished inside the box to make it 2–1 in the dying moments , but there was no time for a comeback.
By full time, Portugal had registered 18 shot attempts to Chile’s 11, with 61.7% possession across the 90 minutes.
What to Take From This
The performance had plenty to encourage. Portugal’s midfield — Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings — looked sharp, and the second-half substitutes made an immediate impact. Guedes, in particular, will have done his World Cup squad chances no harm.
The Leão red card is the one cloud. Ronaldo is set to make a record-tying sixth World Cup appearance , and with the squad already missing PSG players who joined late following the Champions League final, suspension concerns are the last thing Martínez needs.
Portugal now shift focus to a friendly against Nigeria on 10 June before heading to North America, where they open their World Cup campaign against DR Congo on 17 June in Houston. They face DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia in Group K.
