Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT): The Ultimate Mountain Challenge
Prepare to witness one of the most breathtaking, demanding, and exhilarating athletic events in Europe. The Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT) is a world-renowned mountain race that crosses the island from sea-to-sea, attracting thousands of elite athletes and passionate trail runners from all over the globe.
Whether you are participating in one of the grueling races, supporting a runner, or simply visiting to soak up the incredible festival atmosphere, MIUT weekend is a phenomenal time to experience the resilient, welcoming spirit of Madeira.
Crossing the Island: From Sea to Clouds
The premier event—the MIUT Legend (115 km)—kicks off at midnight in Porto Moniz on the northwest coast. Runners traverse the island's most rugged and spectacular terrain guided only by headlamps. The course pushes athletes through the central mountainous massif, climbing above the clouds at Pico Ruivo (the island's highest peak at 1,862m), navigating lush UNESCO laurel forests, and finally descending to sea level for a triumphant finish in the southeastern town of Machico.
A Distance for Every Ambition
While the 115 km crossing is the ultimate challenge, the event is designed to be accessible to various levels of mountain runners. MIUT features five distinct races, all finishing in Machico:
MIUT Legend: 115 km (Starting in Porto Moniz)
MIUT Advanced: 85 km (Starting in São Vicente)
MIUT Discover: 60 km (Starting in Boaventura)
MIUT Marathon: 42 km (Starting in Funchal)
MIUT Starter: 16 km (Starting in Porto da Cruz)
The Spectator Experience
The atmosphere during MIUT is electric. The entire island rallies behind the athletes, with locals and tourists alike cheering loudly from steep climbs and aid stations. The finish line in Machico feels like a massive community festival, celebrating human endurance against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.
