Set up for living rather than staying
A full kitchen with an oven and a dishwasher, a washing machine, a table that seats six and 140 square metres to spread out in. The things that are invisible on a four night trip and decide a month.

São Martinho, which is where people actually live
A green residential slope above the Lido rather than the old town: pines, gardens, low blocks and the sea through the trees. Quiet at night and five minutes from a supermarket, which is the right way round for a stay measured in weeks.
About this home
A month is the length of stay at which Funchal stops being a place you are visiting. The first week is the one everybody plans: the levadas, the market, the cable car, the drive to the north coast. The second is when you find a café you go back to and stop photographing the harbour. By the third you have a supermarket you prefer, opinions about the buses, and a sense of the weather here, which is not one climate but about four of them arranged by altitude and changing hour to hour. The island rewards that kind of stay more than almost anywhere: most of what is worth seeing is an hour away and best done on a clear morning you did not know was coming, which is a thing you can only take advantage of if you are not leaving on Saturday.
