  • The cliff is the view, and it is six hundred metres of it

Palheiro Jardim faces inland, straight at the wall of the valley. You get the light coming down it in the morning and the terraces picked out on it in the evening, from the door and from the bed.

  • A whole stone house, not a room in one

Two floors of a restored palheiro with your own front door, your own table outside it and nobody above or below you. The roof is the original A frame, stripped back and left showing over the bed.

  • It is small, and it is simple on purpose

Forty square metres, a microwave and a toaster rather than a cooker, and no washing machine. There is a barbecue in the shared courtyard and the village is five minutes down the hill. If that sounds like a holiday, it is a very good one. If it sounds like camping, book Palheiro Mar next door or one of the Funchal flats.

About this home

The thing nobody photographs well in Paúl do Mar is how close the mountain is. The village sits on a narrow shelf and the land behind it does not slope, it stands up: six hundred metres of terraced cliff, close enough from this side of the plot that it fills the whole of the sky above the fence and near enough vertical that you can follow a single footpath all the way up it with your eye. It changes all day. First light comes over the top of it late, so mornings here start in shade and then arrive all at once; by evening the sun has gone round to the sea and the whole face turns gold from the top down while the village is already dim. People who stay on this side tend to end up eating outside just to watch it happen.
