The garden ends at the sea
Flower beds, a picnic table and a wall, and then the Atlantic. The veranda along the front of the house is over the water rather than looking at it, and the sun sets into it from March to September.

Ten people can be in six rooms at once
Three floors, two sitting rooms, a dining room that seats everyone, a kitchen you can cook in properly and a landing with sofas on it. Nobody has to sit on a bed to get away from anybody.

It is a real house, not a rental
Beams, a dresser, two open fireplaces, a bar built into the stairwell and a room with an easel in it. Nothing here was bought in a set. If you want white walls and a Nespresso machine, book the Lido.
About this home
Four hundred square metres is a strange amount of house to be given on holiday. It is the size of a building that was meant for a family that grew and then did not shrink, and it still behaves like one: rooms open off other rooms rather than off corridors, the good sitting room has the fireplace and the shutters and gets used twice, and the room everybody actually ends up in is the kitchen, because it is warm and it has the hearth in it. There is a fair amount of stairs. The top floor has a window in the gable with a table under it that looks straight up at the peak behind the village, and somebody in every group finds it on the second day and sits there. It is an hour from Funchal down a road that spends much of its length in tunnels, and it is the sort of place where a group of ten stops planning days out by about the Wednesday.
