Madeira Carnival: Funchal’s Most Vibrant Street Party

Experience the rhythm, color, and undeniable energy of the Madeira Carnival, one of Europe's most spectacular street festivals. Taking over the capital city of Funchal every February, this two-week celebration transforms the island into a vibrant hub of music, elaborate costumes, and non-stop entertainment.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning guest at an Ola Madeira property, the Carnival is an unforgettable cultural experience divided into two unmissable main events:

The Grand Allegoric Parade (Cortejo Alegórico)

Taking place on the main Saturday night of the festival, this is the blockbuster event. Over 1,500 performers and beautifully decorated floats parade down Avenida do Mar. Expect towering feathered headdresses, high-energy samba choreography, and a dazzling display of island creativity that rivals the famous carnivals of Brazil.

The Slapstick Parade (Cortejo Trapalhão)

Held on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday) afternoon, the Cortejo Trapalhão represents the true, spontaneous soul of Madeira. This historic parade is famous for its sharp social and political satire, hilarious homemade costumes, and interactive crowds. It is an open invitation for locals and tourists alike to dress up, poke fun at the world, and dance through the streets of Funchal.

Tips for Attending:

  • Arrive Early: The main parades along Avenida do Mar draw massive crowds. Head to the city center by late afternoon to secure a good standing spot, or purchase grandstand tickets in advance.

  • Getting There: Parking in downtown Funchal during Carnival is limited. We recommend walking from your accommodation or utilizing the island's public transport network.
