Madeira Classic Car Revival 2026: A Journey Through Automotive Elegance

Step back into the golden age of motoring. Set against the spectacular backdrop of Funchal’s sunlit bay, the Madeira Classic Car Revival (MCCR) is an unmissable annual celebration of automotive history, design, and culture.

Organized by the Clube de Automóveis Clássicos da Madeira (CACM), this multi-day event transforms downtown Funchal into a sprawling, open-air museum. Featuring over 400 meticulously restored vintage cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, the Revival is a cornerstone of the island's spring event calendar, perfectly capturing the premium, nostalgic charm of the Madeira lifestyle.

What to Expect at the 2026 Revival

The event takes over the gardens and squares along Avenida do Mar—stretching from the Sá Carneiro Roundabout to Praça da Autonomia. Whether you are a dedicated gearhead or simply appreciate classic design, the weekend is packed with visual spectacles:

  • The Grand Exhibition: Wander through hundreds of classic vehicles produced prior to 1996, grouped meticulously by class (Automobiles, Motorcycles, and Bicycles). You will also find an exclusive, invitation-only showcase of "Pre-Classics" (prestigious vehicles from 1996 to 2002) and rare guest vehicles brought in specifically for their historical significance.

  • The Competitions: Throughout the weekend, international technical experts and invited juries will evaluate the vehicles to award the coveted Best of Show, Originality, and Elegance titles. The most breathtaking vehicles are pre-selected to parade down the runway at Praça do Povo before the final award ceremony. Keep an eye out for the "Masters"—previous Best of Show winners that have earned their place in a dedicated exhibition space.

  • Dressed for the Occasion: The atmosphere is elevated by participants and visitors leaning into the era. The event typically features a period-dress contest, where guests wearing vintage clothing or accessories that let them "travel through time" help recreate the magic of past centuries.

  • The Automotive Fair: Beyond the vehicles themselves, the event features a vibrant automotive fair, an automobilia market, displays of ongoing restoration projects, and pedal-powered kart tracks for younger visitors.

The Historic Rampa dos Barreiros (Sunday, May 24)

The crowning jewel of the weekend takes place on Sunday with the re-enactment of the Rampa dos Barreiros. This historic hill climb pays homage to the very first major automotive race held on the island in 1935. Competitors will push their vintage machines to the limit, driving through the steep, winding streets of Funchal. It is a thrilling sensory experience—the roar of classic engines, the smell of exhaust, and the cheering crowds make it a must-see spectacle.

Insider Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time for Photography: Arrive early in the morning (between 09:00 and 10:30) to photograph the cars along the waterfront before the heaviest crowds arrive. The afternoon parades at Praça do Povo offer the best action shots.

  • The "Baptism of Classics": Keep an eye out at the CACM stands. In previous years, the organization has distributed free vouchers for visitors to experience a ride as a passenger in one of the classic cars—a truly unforgettable experience.

  • Getting There: The south lane of Avenida do Mar is often closed to regular traffic to allow the classic cars to circulate. It is highly recommended to walk from your accommodation or park in one of the larger garages on the outskirts of the downtown area (such as the Almirante Reis or CR7 Museum car parks) and stroll to the event.
