Atlantic Festival 2026: Madeira's Summer Begins With Fireworks
The Atlantic Festival is how Madeira opens its summer. Every Saturday night in June, international teams compete in a pyromusical fireworks competition over Funchal Bay, 20 minutes of fireworks choreographed to music, watched by the whole city. In 2026 the competition nights fall on 6, 13, 20 and 27 June.
It's far more than fireworks, though. Across the month the festival fills Funchal with free open-air concerts, dance and street performances, so there's something happening most evenings even between the big Saturday shows. There's a neat detail too: the winning pyrotechnics team earns the honour of staging the island's famous New Year's Eve display.
Need to know: Free. The fireworks launch around 22:30 on competition Saturdays, watch from the seafront (Avenida do Mar), the marina, or any high street with a view of the bay. Arrive early on the busiest nights; central streets get packed.
For a front-row seat without the crowds, a sea-view stay over the bay is the move, see Santa Catarina, with its sea-view balcony.
