The Atlantic Festival is Madeira's start of summer, and its centre is fireworks. On four Saturday nights, 5, 12, 19 and 26 June, pyrotechnic teams from different countries fire a show over Funchal Bay set to music, and the displays are judged as a contest; by tradition the winner earns the island's New Year's Eve display. Between the Saturdays the festival puts free shows on in the city centre through the rest of June.
