For a month Funchal is decorated in flowers, and three days carry the festival. On the morning of Saturday 1 May, children each bring a flower to Praça do Município and build them into the Wall of Hope, an appeal for peace. On Sunday 2 May and again on Sunday 16 May the allegorical parade takes Avenida do Mar in the afternoon: floats covered in flowers, groups in costume and music the whole length of the seafront. Around them, flower carpets are laid on Avenida Arriaga, a flower market sells regional food and drink, and classic cars dressed in flowers get a parade of their own.

The parade is the reason to time a trip, and with two Sundays there are two chances at it. Pick the one that fits your flights, then book the stay first, because both parade weekends fill central Funchal. On the day, a grandstand seat is the difference between watching the floats and watching the back of the crowd; without one, the barrier along Avenida do Mar is taken early. The carpets and the flower market are there on the days in between, so a trip that misses both Sundays still sees the city dressed for it.
