The four classic grapes run from dry to sweet as Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey, and Verdelho is dry enough to drink before dinner while still tasting of what makes Madeira different. Anything that does not name a grape is usually Tinta Negra, which is cheaper and made across the whole range.
