Festa de Nossa Senhora do Monte 2026
This is the big one, the feast of the patron saint of Madeira, drawing the faithful and the curious up to the church at Monte. The night of the 14th into the 15th is a full arraial; the 15th brings a solemn morning Mass led by the Bishop of Funchal and a procession through the parish, with pilgrims famously climbing the church's steps on their knees to keep a promise.

It's sacred and festive in equal measure, incense and procession by day, music, espetada and dancing by night. Even if you skip the religious side, the setting high above Funchal makes the trip worth it.
Good to know: Free. Monte sits above the city; the most memorable way up is the cable car from the seafront, gorgeous views, no traffic or parking to fight. Expect crowds on the 15th.
Base in Funchal and ride up via the Funchal cable car; old-town stays like Carreira Solar are an easy walk from the station.
