The Festa de Nossa Senhora do Monte is Madeira's most significant religious celebration, drawing thousands of pilgrims to the hillside church above Funchal.
The night of the 14th is filled with music and celebration, while the 15th brings a solemn Mass and procession led by the Bishop of Funchal. Pilgrims famously climb the church steps on their knees in devotion, while the entire area becomes a mix of sacred ritual and street festival atmosphere.
Stay in central Funchal for easy access to the Monte cable car. Carreira Solar is within walking distance of the station, with several other old-town and city stays nearby.
