Noite do Mercado 2026: Funchal's Market Night
The island's wildest, most beloved tradition. On the night of the 23rd, families pour into the streets around the Mercado dos Lavradores to do their last Christmas shopping, fruit, flowers, the Christmas meat and fish, but it turns into a giant street party. Stalls sell poncha by the litre, grupos de cantares sing traditional songs, and the whole city stays up.

It's loud, packed and joyful, and unlike anything else on the calendar. If you're in Funchal at Christmas, this is the night not to sleep through.
Good to know: Free; pay at the stalls. It runs into the early hours of the 24th. The Mercado dos Lavradores and the old- town streets around it are the heart of it, go on foot.
