The Atlantic starts across the road
Not a sea view from a hillside. You open the front door, cross the lane, and you are on the front at Paúl do Mar, which faces west and takes the whole of the sunset.

You sleep in the roof of a two hundred year old palheiro
The loft is the original roof, opened up: bare stone to the gable, a pitched ceiling of varnished beams over the bed, and a hardwood floor the length of the building. It is one room and it is the best one.

A courtyard with a real stone barbecue
Cobbles, a long picnic table and the cliffs straight up behind it. It is shared with the one other cottage on the plot, so on a full weekend there may be two of you out there.
About this home
Paúl do Mar is a fishing village on a shelf of flat ground at the foot of cliffs that go up six hundred metres behind it, and for most of its life the only ways in were the sea and a path. It is three streets deep, the boats are pulled up at the end of it, and the whole village faces west into the open Atlantic with nothing between it and Nova Scotia. What that means in practice is a lot of weather and very good light: the afternoons here are long and orange, and the swell that makes this a surfing coast comes ashore about twenty metres from the front door. It is also a genuinely remote place, an hour from Funchal by a road that spends much of its length in tunnels, and that is the trade. People who want a base for day trips should be in the city. People who want to be somewhere that stops when the sun goes down should be here.
