Fifteen minutes from everything, on foot
The marina is seven minutes downhill, the cathedral and the old town about twelve. Avenida do Infante is the flat, shaded half of that walk rather than the steep half.

The balcony hangs over the park
The Parque de Santa Catarina is directly below, so what is outside the doors is dragon trees and palms rather than the building opposite, and the bay is over the top of them.

Somewhere to work that is not a bedroom
The desk sits in its own alcove off the hall, with a door at each end of it. One person can take a call in the morning without turning a bedroom into an office or clearing the dining table.
About this home
Avenida do Infante is the avenue Funchal built when it started taking visitors seriously, and it still looks it: four lanes under plane trees, the old quintas set back behind walls on the uphill side, the casino and the grand hotels below, and the park filling the whole corner where it bends down towards the sea. It is the one street in the city where nothing is steep and nothing is narrow. Walking east from the door you are in the old town in about a quarter of an hour without climbing anything; walking west you are on the promenade at the Lido in half an hour. Very little happens on the avenue itself, which is the point of living on it.
