More than 1,400 athletes from 50 countries race for biathle and triathle world titles at the Centro Náutico de São Lázaro, on the Funchal harbour front. Biathle pairs running with an open-water swim in one continuous race, and triathle is the same thing with laser shooting added to it. Each discipline takes two days: the semi-finals and the mixed relays first, then the individual finals alongside the para races, with gold, silver and bronze in every age group from the under-9s to the masters.

- Best timeRacing starts at 08:00 every day, and the individual finals are morning sessions. The mixed relays are the afternoon draw, going off at 14:00 or 15:00 depending on the day.
- With childrenThey race in it, not just watch it. The age groups start at under-9 and each one has a world title of its own.
This is Madeira's second pentathlon week of 2026, after Machico took the European Championships in biathle, triathle and laser run in June. Access to the field of play and the warm-up zone is controlled by accreditation, so a visitor watches from the quayside rather than from a stand. That is less of a compromise than it sounds: the rules allow a 50m transition between the legs, which puts the harbour swim, the laser range and the asphalt run course on the same stretch of quay and keeps a whole race in front of you.
What People Ask Us About the Championships
When are the Biathle and Triathle World Championships in Funchal?
The biathle titles are decided on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October 2026 and the triathle titles on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October, with racing from 08:00 each day. The laser run world championships follow at the same venue from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November.
What is the difference between biathle and triathle?
Biathle is a continuous run, swim and run with no break between the legs, over distances that depend on the age group: 200m to 800m of running and 50m to 200m of swimming. Triathle is the same race with laser shooting added to it. Both are run under the rules of the UIPM, the international federation for modern pentathlon.
How many athletes are competing in Funchal?
More than 1,400, from 50 countries and five continents, in around 150 teams. They race in age groups that begin at under-9 and run up through the masters categories, and there are separate para biathle and para triathle finals.
Where can I follow the results?
The Portuguese Modern Pentathlon Federation runs the official championship site at fppm.pt, and the UIPM lists the event at uipmworld.org. Medals go to the first three in every age group, so there is a good deal more than one result a day.
