Chestnuts roasting in the dramatic mountain bowl of Curral das Freiras.
Festa da Castanha is one of Madeira's most atmospheric village festivals, set in the dramatic valley of Curral das Freiras.
The whole village fills with the smell of roasted chestnuts, alongside chestnut cakes, liqueurs, soups, poncha and traditional folklore performances, culminating in a lively parade through the streets.
A central Funchal base makes this an easy half-day trip into the mountains. Carreira Vicente and other city stays with parking are ideal for the drive up to Curral das Freiras.
