Black Scabbard-Fish Festival
The black scabbard-fish, that deep-sea, slightly fearsome-looking fish, is a Madeiran staple, and the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos throws a gastronomic festival in its honour. Beyond the food stalls (try it the classic way, with fried banana), it's a genuine window into the island's working fishing culture.
Black Scabbardfish Festival
Câmara de Lobos has one of the prettiest harbours on the south coast, so the festival pairs perfectly with a poncha at the waterfront where the drink was more or less invented.
Good to know: Free entry; pay at the stalls. Evenings are liveliest. About 15 minutes west of Funchal by car or bus.
Any of our Funchal stays works; the Lido Casa apartment sits on the same side of the city, closest to Câmara de Lobos.
