A snack bar on the quay in Paúl do Mar whose kitchen has travelled further than most. Fried limpets and bolo do caco on one half of the page, ceviche and chicken chow mein on the other, and every plate small enough to order three of them.
About Bar da Lapa
The owner is Madeiran and has spent years living in London, Panama and Miami, and the menu reads like it. The tuna steak arrives with chimichurri, the nachos come with chilli and guacamole, and the bruschetta runs from sardines and red onion to smoked salmon with avocado and caviar. The Madeiran half is all there beside it: prego no bolo do caco, clams in wine and garlic, chouriço flamed with prawns.
It is one page of twenty-four plates, from bolo do caco with garlic butter at €5 to polvo à lagareiro at €20, with the vegetarian and vegan ones marked. The menu sets its own portion guide at the top: one dish is a snack, two should keep you going, three means you are very hungry. The bar carries on pouring after the kitchen has stopped, which is the thing to know if you are coming down for the evening rather than for dinner.
