The way most people get from the Old Town up to Monte, and the ride is the point of it: a quarter of an hour hanging over orange roofs, banana gardens and the ravines, with the harbour falling away behind and the whole city laid out under the cabin.
About the Funchal Cable Car
The Teleférico runs from Campo Almirante Reis, at the sea end of the Old Town, to the parish of Monte six hundred metres above it. The line climbs over the roofs of Santa Maria and then over the gardens and the ravine, so the view changes the whole way rather than arriving at the end. At the top the station puts you a short walk from the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, the church, and the shed where the carreiros wait with the wicker toboggans. Riding up and taking a toboggan back down is what most people do with the morning.
