Funchal's New Year's Eve display is a former Guinness World Record holder for the world's largest fireworks show, launched simultaneously from dozens of points around the bay. Good to know: Free to watch from anywhere with a view of the bay, the seafront, the higher streets, the Lido promenade and the western hillsides all work. Arrive early for a spot; expect closures and big crowds in the centre. A sea-view balcony is the dream seat.
