Best Time to Visit Madeira: Month-by-Month Guide

Madeira coastline under clear skies

The honest answer: any month. Madeira earns its "island of eternal spring" label — temperatures at sea level in Funchal run from around 17°C in January to 26°C in August, and the rain, when it comes, is usually short-lived.

But the best month for you depends on what you're here for — hiking, sun, flowers, festivals or value. The month-by-month breakdown below is our honest take.

How the island works

Understanding Madeira's climate

Misty green Madeira interior

Madeira sits in the Atlantic at roughly the same latitude as Casablanca, and the Gulf Stream keeps temperatures mild year-round. But the mountainous interior creates a dramatic split: the south coast (Funchal, Calheta, Câmara de Lobos) is much sunnier and drier than the north coast, which catches the Atlantic moisture and stays green and lush.

On any given day Funchal can be 24°C and sunny while the interior forest is wrapped in cool mist. Pack layers whenever you visit.

Madeira weather month by month

Madeira in winter

January

Funchal high 17°C · Sea 18°C · Rain moderate. Madeira's winter is what most of Europe calls a mild spring. Once the New Year crowds clear out around 6 January, the island settles into one of its calmest, cheapest stretches. Mornings on the levadas are cool and clear — good walking if you start early and layer up.

February

Funchal high 17°C · Sea 17°C · Rain moderate. February belongs to Madeira Carnival — roughly two weeks of parades, costume and music through Funchal's streets. The real thing, not a show put on for visitors. Book your stay well ahead; the city fills fast.

Madeira in spring

March

Funchal high 18°C · Sea 17°C · Rain moderate, decreasing. Spring arrives and the mountains turn vivid green after the winter rains. A busy cultural month — the Madeira Music Festival runs 7–28 March, with the Book Fair and Chocolate Market late in the month. Quiet trails, lively town.

April

Funchal high 20°C · Sea 18°C · Rain low. One of the best months. The Flower Festival typically falls late April into early May and transforms Funchal. Levadas are at their finest — water flowing, flora in bloom. This is the best levada walking of the year; see our pick of the best hikes and levada walks, and book through SIMplifica early, as Flower Festival slots fill quickly.

May

Funchal high 22°C · Sea 19°C · Rain low. Arguably the single best month: warm but not hot, the island at its most photogenic, crowds lighter than summer. The Flower Festival continues into early May, and the Madeira Classic Car Revival (22–24 May 2026) is a bonus for enthusiasts.

Madeira in summer

June

Funchal high 24°C · Sea 21°C · Rain very low. Summer begins. The Atlantic Festival runs through June with nightly fireworks over Funchal bay; evenings on the promenade are long and sociable. The city starts to fill from mid-month.

July

Funchal high 26°C · Sea 22°C · Rain very low. Peak season — warm, reliably dry, long days. The Lido and seafront fill up and levada trails are at their busiest. Hiking PR1 in July? Book the moment your trip is confirmed.

August

Funchal high 26°C · Sea 23°C · Rain very low. The warmest and busiest month. The Madeira Wine Festival opens late August into September — tastings, vineyard visits and the grape harvest in Câmara de Lobos.

September

Funchal high 25°C · Sea 24°C · Rain very low to low. Sea temperature peaks — the best swimming of the year. The Wine Festival continues and crowds thin from mid-month. An excellent month that's often overlooked in favour of August.

Madeira in autumn

October

Funchal high 23°C · Sea 23°C · Rain increasing. Autumn brings less predictable weather — sunny mornings can give way to afternoon showers. The island is at its quietest and most affordable, and surfing season begins in earnest on the west coast.

November

Funchal high 20°C · Sea 21°C · Rain moderate. Quiet, green and genuinely peaceful — the laurel forest is spectacular after rain, and this is when the locals reclaim the island. A good month for slow travellers; also fine for hiking — see the best hikes and levada walks.

Madeira New Year fireworks

December

Funchal high 18°C · Sea 19°C · Rain moderate. The run-up to New Year is Funchal at its most spectacular — elaborate Christmas illuminations from early December and a New Year's Eve fireworks display that's among the largest in the world relative to the size of the city. Hotels book out months ahead.
