Madeirans take Christmas seriously, and Funchal shows it. From early December the city centre glows with elaborate lights, and Avenida Arriaga fills with a Christmas village and mercadinho selling regional sweets, crafts, bolo de mel, poncha and roasted chestnuts. The lights switch-on is an event in itself.
It runs right through the festive period, so any December trip catches it. Wander the lit-up streets, grab a hot drink, and the city does the rest.
Good to know: Free to enjoy; pay at the market stalls. Centred on Avenida Arriaga and the old town, all walkable. Best after dark, naturally.
