Best Restaurants in Funchal: Where to Eat in 2026
Funchal has a restaurant scene that punches above its size. There are genuinely excellent places here — but there are also tourist traps around every corner of the Old Town, offering mediocre food at inflated prices to people who don't know better.
This list is from locals. The places we send our guests. The restaurants we eat at ourselves.
Quick Answer: Top Restaurants in Funchal
Best seafood: Peixaria da Avenida
Best Italian / fusion: Sabores D'Itália (Lido area)
Best casual lunch: O Giro
Best poncha & cocktails: Dash Cocktail Bar
Best for espetada: look for grill houses in Câmara de Lobos and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos
Peixaria da Avenida
Funchal's best straight seafood restaurant for our money. Order the lapas (limpets) as a starter — they come out of the kitchen sizzling. Then the black scabbard fish (peixe espada) with banana, which sounds odd and tastes exceptional. Portions are honest; the wine list is short but the Madeira wines by the glass are correctly chosen.
Busy at lunchtime and on weekend evenings — book ahead for dinner.
Sabores D'Itália
In the Lido area. Italian-Madeiran fusion that works — genuinely good pasta made in-house, with local ingredients woven in. The owner sources produce locally and it shows in the quality. One of the most consistent restaurants we recommend to guests staying in the Lido area.
O Giro Churros & Paninis
A casual spot on Rua da Carreira — good coffee, excellent churros, and paninis that are more interesting than the name suggests. Good for breakfast or a quick lunch between sightseeing. The kind of place where you'll end up eating twice.
Where to Drink: Funchal's Best Bars
Dash Cocktail Bar (olamadeira.pt/experiences/dash-cocktail-bar): One of the best cocktail bars on the island. A proper bar programme, well-made drinks, and a good range of poncha-based cocktails. The room is small and fills up — arrive early on weekends.
Böate Pub & Disco Club (olamadeira.pt/experiences/boate): The place if you want a late night. Funchal's best-known nightlife venue. Good for groups.
On the West Coast: Bar de Pedra, Paúl do Mar
Not a Funchal restaurant, but worth including for guests staying on the west coast. Bar de Pedra in Paúl do Mar is the social centre of the village — tables on a sea-view terrace, excellent espetada and fresh fish, and some of the best poncha on the island.
Tips for Eating Well in Funchal
Avoid the menus with photos near the cathedral. The restaurants clustered around the Sé cater almost exclusively to passing tourists.
Lunch is better value than dinner everywhere. Most restaurants offer a prato do dia (daily special) at lunchtime for €8–12.
Book for dinner at the popular places. Funchal's good restaurants are small. A same-day call or WhatsApp to reserve is wise on weekend evenings.
Go where the locals eat. The city's residential neighbourhoods have restaurants without English menus and no tourist markup.
