The 19th Festa da Lapa lights up the harbour of Paúl do Mar this July, two days of grilled limpets, live music and dancing in one of Madeira's most beautiful fishing villages. Entry is free, and it's the biggest weekend of the year on the south-west coast.

What to expect
The star is the limpet, grilled in garlic butter with a squeeze of lemon and served straight from the harbour-side stalls. You'll also find lapas in escabeche, limpet rice, octopus and other fresh seafood, washed down with a cold beer or a poncha at tables by the water.
The festival opens with the Banda Municipal Paulense parading down to the port. From around 22:00, regional bands take the stage and DJs carry the crowd into the early hours, all set against towering cliffs and the Atlantic at sunset. It's a true Madeiran arraial, and it draws Paulense emigrants home from around the world, which gives the whole weekend a warm, reunion feel.
Getting there
Paúl do Mar sits about 40 minutes by car from Funchal, west towards Ribeira Brava and Calheta. There's no practical late-night transport, so bring a hire car or taxi, and arrive with daylight to spare, village parking fills up fast.
The smartest move is to stay in the village and walk to the festival.
