Staying in Madeira Without a Car: Where to Base & How to Manage

You do not need a car to enjoy Madeira. The caveat: you need to base yourself in the right place.

If you stay in central Funchal, the best restaurants, the Lido promenade, the Mercado dos Lavradores, the cable car, the Old Town and a full slate of day trips to the island's highlights are all reachable on foot, by bus, or by taxi. The island's rural west and remote north are less practical without wheels — but for a first trip of 5–7 days, you don't need to go everywhere.

Quick Answer: Can You Visit Madeira Without a Car?

Yes, easily for a Funchal-based trip. Funchal's city centre is compact and walkable, bus routes cover the main sights, and taxis are inexpensive by European standards. Bolt is available in the city with reasonable driver availability (unlike at the airport).

You'll want a car for: the remote west coast (Paúl do Mar, Ponta do Pargo), the north coast (Porto Moniz, Santana) if you're going independently, and some levada trailheads that aren't on bus routes.

Where to Stay: The Best Car-Free Bases in Funchal

Old Town & Rua da Carreira

The most walkable part of Funchal. From Rua da Carreira, you can reach: the Sé cathedral (5 min), Mercado dos Lavradores (10 min), the marina (10 min), the cable car lower station (10 min), the Zona Velha (5 min), and the first stretch of the seafront promenade (15 min).

Our stays: Carreira Solar (couples, 1-bed) and Carreira Vicente (up to 4, 2-bed). Both include underground parking — useful if you decide to add a hire car mid-trip.

Avenida do Infante / Santa Catarina

Walkable to the city centre and to the Lido in opposite directions. Santa Catarina Park is on your doorstep. The shopping mall (supermarket) is 5 minutes away.

Our stay: Santa Catarina — sleeps 4, sea-view balcony, private parking included.

    Lido Area

The Lido complex and the start of the seafront promenade are walkable. The 25-minute promenade walk into central Funchal along the coast is one of the best things you can do in Funchal regardless of transport.

Our stays: Lido Branca and Lido Casa — both with pool access and free parking.

Getting Around Without a Car: Day-by-Day Practicalities

    Funchal City

Everything inside the city is walkable or a short taxi ride. Bolt is reasonably available in Funchal proper. City buses (HORÁRIOS DO FUNCHAL) cover the main areas.

Madeira TukTuk is an excellent option for Funchal city and nearby sights.

    Cable Car to Monte

The cable car lower station is in the Old Town, about 10 minutes' walk from Rua da Carreira. No car needed. Take the wicker toboggan back down for the full circuit.

    Levada Hikes (Day Trips)

Book a guided hiking day through Hiking Madeira — they handle transport to and from trailheads, plus the SIMplifica booking.

    • Organised tours depart from Funchal for most major levadas (Calderão Verde, 25 Fontes, PR1) and include transport.

    • Taxi to some trailheads is practical — ask your accommodation for current schedules.

West Coast & North Coast Day Trips

Without a car, organised tours are the most practical option. Full-day jeep or coach tours run daily from Funchal and cover the main sights.

When You Might Reconsider the Car

If any of the following apply, a hire car will improve your trip significantly:

    • You want to stay in Paúl do Mar or anywhere on the west coast.

    • You want to do the PR1 ridge walk (the access road to Pico do Arieiro is not on a public bus route).

    • You want to explore the north coast independently rather than on a tour.

    • You're travelling with young children or limited mobility — the hilly pavements of the Old Town can be tiring.

Car rental from the airport is straightforward. Go Go Away Madeira is our recommended local operator.

    FAQ: Madeira Without a Car

    • Yes — Funchal is entirely manageable without a car. Most levada day trips and west-coast excursions can be done on guided tours if you don't want to drive.

    • Within Funchal, yes. For the wider island, buses are comprehensive but slow. Most independent travellers find a car makes the island much more accessible.

    • Book a guided hiking day through a licensed operator — they handle transport to trailheads and the SIMplifica permit.

    • Yes, though it is hilly. The core area between the Old Town, marina and Lido is flat enough; heading uphill toward Monte or the Botanical Garden requires more effort. Good footwear is recommended.
