A small bar that does its best work outside, and the reason to come is the hour before dark. You sit at a metal table above the water and watch the sun go down into the Atlantic. Go for that, and let dinner happen somewhere else.
About Charlotte's Place
It is one shop unit in a shopping centre, number 67, with an esplanade outside that does the real work. Cocktails and poncha are what it pours, and the specials board has stretched to a springbokkie, the South African shooter of Amarula and crème de menthe, sold beside the poncha. The terrace has had a barbecue on it more than once, and birthdays end up here.
The centre it sits in is at Ponta da Cruz, close to the Doca do Cavacas bathing complex and a few minutes along the shore from Praia Formosa. Funchal's seaside promenade reaches this point from the Lido, past the Marine Biology Station and the Ponta Gorda complex, so the better way to arrive is on foot from the Lido hotels rather than by car. The tunnel at Doca do Cavacas carries the path on from here towards Câmara de Lobos.
