The covered terrace at the front of El Mexicano in Funchal, hung with fairy lights, under a sign reading Mexican and Argentinian.
The terrace at the front of the unit, lit for the Christmas season.

More steakhouse than taqueria once you read the menu, with a charcoal grill at the heart of it and the Mexican dishes alongside. Come for grilled meat and an evening that runs on into live music at the weekend.

About El Mexicano

The sign over the terrace reads Mexican and Argentinian, and that is the honest description of the kitchen: a charcoal grill turning out espetada, fillet steaks and beef skewers, with nachos, tacos and petiscos sharing the menu beside it. The restaurant trades as Cantina El Mexicano on its own Facebook and Instagram, which is worth knowing when you go looking for it online or searching for the menu.

It doubles as a late bar. Its own pages promise live music on Saturdays, and weekend nights run to themed sessions with either a band or a DJ, so a table here at the weekend is an evening out rather than a quick dinner. The centre sits on the seafront promenade that runs from the Lido complex round to Praia Formosa, so you can walk there along the sea from the Lido hotels instead of driving.
