A poncha bar that grew a kitchen. With a charrette hanging over the dining room, this is the dressed-up end of Funchal's hotel zone: a wine list past 180 labels, the house poncha, and a proper dinner after it.
About Poncha da Imperatriz
Poncha da Imperatriz opened as a bar in the Gallerias in 2022 and added the restaurant at the end of 2023, which is why it still reads as two places in one: a poncha counter at the front and a dining room behind it. The room is the work of the Nini Andrade Silva atelier, wood and wicker and animal print under high ceilings, with giant wine racks and a charrette, a Madeiran cart, hung over the tables.
The kitchen is Portuguese and Italian in roughly equal measure. Bolo do caco and ovos rotos to start, then risotto four ways, from mushroom with truffle oil to algae with dehydrated mushrooms, and linguini nero with prawns. The grill is where the house puts its own name: the fillet à Imperatriz, grilled ribeye, grilled prawns with citrus sauce, and a chocolate charrette to finish that shares its name with the cart overhead.
